Steps to a quintessential staircase

Vaastu Shastra recommends the use of the following parameters for the construction of a flawless staircase:

Placement and Installation:

  • According to Vaastu Shastra, the square and rectangular staircase, bending at the right angle are best for internal or external affairs.
  • The stairs should turn up clockwise.
  • The face of climbing stairs should be in either south or west direction.
  • Stairs can be built in the north-west to south-west zone and south-west to southeast zone. The ideal direction for construction of stairs in the house is south-west, south and west are the next best options.
  • There must be no rising stairs in front of the main door.

Number of Steps in a staircase

  • The appropriate number of steps for the staircase is equal to the number of stairs divided by 3 and the remainder should be 2. For ex. 5, 11, 17, 23, etc
  • The number of steps for a rising staircase should not end with a 0. For ex. 10, 20, 30, etc.

Steer Clear of

  • Do not build a worship room under the stairs.
  • Do not put pictures of God under the stairs.
  • Avoid the construction of the kitchen under the stairs
  • Avoid the construction of a washroom under the stairs.
  • Do not place a bed under the stairs.
  • Avoid putting a locker under the staircase.
  • Avoid placing a workstation under the stairs.
  • Do not build stairs in the center (Brahmasthan) of the house.
  • The staircase must not be in the anti-clockwise direction as it has an impact on career, and physical/mental health of family members, especially women.
  • Stairs must not be constructed in the north-east corners of the house whether they are indoor or outdoor.
